Thesis Title:
VISION AND KAVANNAH:
Visual Stimuli and Spiritual Intention in the Jewish Tradition (2012)

Abstract:
This is a survey exploring a correlation of Jewish traditional use of visual phenomena with the Jewish concept of directing one’s heart towards Heaven. One question it addresses is whether Jewish Tradition supports the use of the visual to build one of its most interior concepts: kavanah. The second question is whether visual methods used to enhance a mitzvah, are critical to the religious life of a Jew.  This thesis examines the visual relationship of the uses of color, symbols, text, decorative arts in sacred space, and mitzvot with the importance of kavanah.
