ACTIVIST, MYSTIC, QUAKER AND JEW:
Comparing the Life And Work of Rufus M. Jones and Abraham Joshua Heschel (2011)

Abstract:
Pivotal figures in their respective faiths, the Quaker Rufus Jones and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel shared remarkable similarities in their life experiences, their dedication to activism, and their prolific writings. Profoundly, each discovered a life-altering idea at the core of his faith: even as it is human nature to seek God, God is also in search of humans. Longing for spiritual engagement, God seeks us to fulfill the Divine plan for perfection of the universe. This thesis attempts to explore how dynasty and destiny — both what they were born into and how they chose to interpret it — led two men to make unique and complimentary contributions to Jewish and Quaker thought. In so doing it spurs the reader to consider the important gifts that these two faith traditions have for one another.
