Parasha Vayeitzei, Genesis 28:10-32:3

As Esau was responsible for his own choices in parashat Toledot, so was Jacob responsible for his choices.  In his dream, he is not concerned with whether it was real or not, but in creating language that portrayed its mystical nature.  For Jacob, there is a simple meaning:  if God remains with him then he will return to carry out the promises made to his father and his father’s father.  Esau also was given a birthright, although not in a dream.  For Esau, the birthright meant filling the position of patriarch after Isaac passed away.  Rabbi Ruditsky raises some fascinating perspectives on the choices of Jacob and Esau.
